Designer Challenge: Spider-Man’s Mary Jane & Peter

Why did you choose this TV/movie couple and what’s your fascination with them?

Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s love story is one of enduring connection, sacrifice and growth – woven through heartbreak, heroism and hope. They love each other not just for who they are, but for how they see one another – truly and fully. Their story is about two people who find light in each other, even when the world around them is dark. They are, in many ways, the heart and soul of the Spider-Man mythos.

Describe your design in detail.

The save the date is designed as a mini comic book, arriving in guests’ mailboxes in a clear bag reminiscent of in-store packaging.

The booklet features statement cover art, a QR code to their website for more details, dramatic visuals and playful text bubbles. The center spread features foldout pages with onomatopoeias in burst shapes for an authentic and playful accent to the event. Phrases from the comics and movies are sprinkled throughout. On the interior back cover, tech stickers are enclosed in a glassine envelope for a youthful touch highlighting Peter’s love of science and photography.

First dance song suggestion?

Heroes” by David Bowie. An unconventional choice, but thematically rich: two people trying to hold onto love in a chaotic world. Very Spider-Man.

Who would you want to be in the wedding party?

Maid of honor: Gwen Stacy in memory or alternate timeline. Though Gwen passed away in the main continuity, her impact on both Peter and MJ is undeniable. In an alternate universe or symbolic role, she could be honored as maid of honor or remembered during the ceremony.

Best man: Harry Osborn, Peter’s best friend since high school. Despite the rocky history (and supervillain identity issues), Harry’s role in Peter’s life is foundational.

Bridesmaids

  • Liz Allan, high school friend of both Peter and MJ
  • Felicia Hardy (Black Cat), shares complicated past with Peter, but in later stories there’s mutual respect and understanding – possibly even friendship with MJ
  • Betty Bryant, longtime Daily Bugle colleague and one of Peter’s earliest friends

Groomsmen:

  • Flash Thompson, high school rival turned loyal friend and war hero – Flash would 100% give a hilarious, surprisingly touching toast
  • Johnny Storm (Human Torch), Peter’s superhero BFF – they’ve saved each other’s lives countless times
  • Robbie Robertson, a mentor figure and moral compass from the Daily Bugle

Officiant: Aunt May (or possibly Reverend Tolliver, who officiated their wedding in the comics). Aunt May would absolutely want to say a few heartfelt words, but if not officiating, would be front row, dabbing tears.

Who or what would steal the show at this wedding?

Norman Osborn (Green Goblin), Peter’s archenemy and the ultimate agent of chaos, is most likely crasher #1. Norman wouldn’t just crash the wedding – he’d try to ruin it emotionally and physically. In some versions, he’s already responsible for major tragedies in Peter’s life, so his presence would be like a storm cloud overhead.
