Designer Challenge: Up’s Ellie & Carl

Why did you choose this TV/movie couple and what’s your fascination with them?

The opening of Up is so moving and heartwarming with the story of Carl and Ellie growing up and falling for one another. I knew I wanted to retell their story as an invite. The bright colors throughout the movie (their house most of all!) and the opportunity to use balloons in a creative/unexpected way? How could I not want to explore that!

Describe your design in detail.

The design is inspired by their home, mailbox, balloons and the joyful bright colors of the animated movie. Really the colors of their home and mailbox drove the color palette for the suite. Hand-touched script ties back to their adventure book. Then, a surprise in the RSVP envelope flap reflects the iconic balloons from the house chimney from the movie. The whole set embraces color on color, shapes inspired by their home. A balloon sendoff insert shaped like a cloud continues the theme. The entire set is tied with colorful balloons (Carl worked as a balloon artist at the zoo during their marriage). And balloon vintage stamps complete the theme.

First dance song suggestion?

“UP!” by Forrest Frank, Connor Price

Who would you want to be in the wedding party?

Russell, Doug and Kevin

Who or what would steal the show at this wedding?

I feel like some kind of chocolate centerpiece. Or maybe they would arrive/leave via hot air balloon or blimp. Maybe the dogs do an acapella rendition of the Up theme song.
