Designer Challenge: Schitt’s Creek’s David & Patrick

Why did you choose this TV/movie couple and what’s your fascination with them?

Schitt’s Creek is one of my favorite comfort shows that I return to over and over – in which David and Patrick’s love story especially warrants rewatching. Their relationship, built on mutual respect, vulnerability and growth, is genuinely moving – and I find myself rewatching their arc again and again. The two of them also perfectly embody the idea that “opposites attract”: David is dramatic and fashion-forward, while Patrick is grounded and understated. I thought that dynamic would inspire a visually rich and contrasting wedding suite. That kind of juxtaposition also mirrors the broader theme of the show – the worldly, designer-donning Rose family learning to adapt and connect in a quaint and quirky town that’s their opposite in every way.

Describe your design in detail.

This suite is a marriage (pun intended!) of David and Patrick’s sensibilities – balancing Patrick’s traditional charm with David’s flair for opulence and the avant-garde. The black invitation nods to the “black” dress code from their on-screen wedding, while the welcome party card is styled like Rosebud Motel stationery, playing into the casual, “soft launch” vibe of the weekend – complete with a doodled quote, “Wine not the label” from David. The brunch card features a checkered border inspired by Café Tropical’s linoleum floors, where the farewell event is set. A motel key-shaped website insert card and a reply envelope that channels the retro charm of the town further root the suite in the show’s quirky, small-town aesthetic. The fashion – especially David’s dramatic wardrobe – also informed the suite’s bold visual direction.

First dance song suggestion?

“Simply the Best” by Tina Turner!

Who or what would steal the show at this wedding?

Alexis, flouting the dress code and wearing white!
