Why did you choose this TV/movie couple and what’s your fascination with them?
I chose Edward and Bella because they’re camp, they’re spooky and they’re totally iconic! Twilight was a KEY piece of late 2000s/early 2010s media, and I think we’re seeing a huge revival of fascination with this specific time. Edward and Bella’s on-screen wedding took over Pinterest boards for years afterwards. I love the moody color palette of the films – I made sure to incorporate the deep reds and cool blue-greens. Overall, I love that we’re very recently seeing these sorts of aesthetics go from painfully outdated to truly nostalgic and up for reinterpretation.
Describe your design in detail.
The suite includes a bloody red velvet outer envelope, addressed with an eclipse and red apple stamp (eclipse, of course as an ode to the third book of the same name, while the red apple was featured on the original first book cover design). The invite card itself is printed on a shimmery white moiré, mimicking the famously sparkly, pearlescent quality of Edward’s skin in the sun. It features Victorian-inspired typography, as Edward Cullen was “turned” into a vampire in the Victorian era. It features subtle corner details derived from the official Cullen family crest.
The individual insert cards detail the events of the weekend, with themed callouts (“Hunt at Dawn” referencing the Cullen family’s habit of hunting for blood in the woods in the early morning, as well as Bella’s iconic vintage pickup truck detailing the Welcome Party). Each card features a real shot of Forks, Washington – the backdrop of the tale. Together, they are wrapped in a blue-green vellum, meant to mimic the intense color grading of the films. It also includes a circular reply card, featuring a silvery foil moon (Edward and Bella’s wedding date takes place on a full moon), inside a wine red envelope. The reply card asks for a meal choice, offering either mushroom ravioli (Bella’s meal on their first date) or a nondescript “V” – meant to reference a “non-meal” – as the Cullens do not eat.
Finally, the suite is wrapped in a moody black vellum, adorned with forest flora and fauna you may see in the Pacific Northwest, where Forks, Washington, site. Finished off with a deep red, dripping wax seal, this suite is fit for vampires!
First dance song suggestion?
Classically, I would suggest the song that plays during Edward and Bella’s first dance ever (at prom, obviously) – “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” by Iron & Wine.
Who would you want to be in the wedding party?
On the bride’s side, absolutely Alie and Rosalie, the Cullen sisters (Alice much more enthusiastic, no doubt). For the groom, both brothers, Jasper and Emmett.
Who or what would steal the show at this wedding?
I would say the venue! A woodsy wedding is always a vibe – the bohemian vibe lived in everyone’s minds for YEARS afterwards. The florals and draping wisteria must have taken forever!
