Why did you choose this TV/movie couple and what’s your fascination with them?
You’ve Got Mail is one of my very favorite movies. Iconic lines and setting, classic enemies-to-lovers plot line, 90s nostalgia – it is so comforting and wonderful.
Describe your design in detail.
It doesn’t matter that the wedding is to be in the fall, the outer envelope is covered in daisies (“the friendliest flower!”, Kathleen’s favorite) and sealed with the classic 90s “YOU HAVE MAIL” emblem. The envelope holds a dark green invitation shaped and styled like Kathleen’s iconic Shop Around the Corner bookstore sign.
The wedding takes place in Riverside Park, the setting of the movie’s final scene. The reception insert is a bookmark as a nod to the couple’s industry. In our fictional world, the reception is somehow able to be held at The Shop Around The Corner (let’s assume it did not become “something really depressing, like a Baby Gap”). The front features the iconic F-O-X, while the back features a checkered pattern inspired by the store’s floors.
The reception card features one of the best questions from the beginning of the movie – “Don’t you just love New York in the fall”) and a warm yellow envelope inspired by “bouquets of freshly sharpened pencils.”
The rehearsal dinner will be held at Café Lalo, the iconic eatery where Joe and Kathleen were to have their first date. Typography is inspired by the venue’s neon sign, and the format is a nod to classic NYC restaurant matchbooks.
First dance song suggestion?
“Somewhere Over the Rainbow”
Who would you want to be in the wedding party?
Christina as maid of honor, Kevin as best man. Joe’s aunt Annabell as flower girl and his brother Matt as ring bearer. Birdie would be the officiant.
